OUR HISTORY

Early days:

The club was founded in 1960 by Marj Groves, who was a strong influence on many people in many ways. Back in 1960 the club was known as "Gymea Girls Basketball Club".

In 1977 court number 1 on Gymea Bay Road, which was the only sealed court, had lighting installed, allowing the netball teams to train at night.

The clubhouse was opened on 1st July 1979. The cost of the clubhouse was $10,000 and was achieved with a $5,000 local government grant and the balance through club fundraising.

90's-00's:

1990 saw Gymea Netball Club become incorporated.

In 1991 Courts 2 and 3 were sealed, giving the club a total of 3 sealed courts.

In 2002 all 3 courts were resurfaced and new goal posts installed. At the same time high fencing was installed around all of the courts to increase safety for the members.

2002 also saw the club move into the electronic age. The website was launched, and the weekly newsletter, The Message Stick, went online.

Big projects:

In 2003 the clubhouse was renamed the "Marj Groves Clubhouse" in honour of the woman who worked
tirelessly for the club, and many other institutions, throughout her life.

In the same year, the club received approval to construct an awning over the entrance and walkway to the clubhouse.

A new pathway was constructed in 2010. This gave our members and visitors easier access to the clubhouse. Courtside benches were also installed the same year.

Modern era:

In 2017 the Executive undertook the biggest project yet for the club with a large renovation on the clubhouse. A new kitchen was installed, the roof lined and the interior was given a facelift with a fresh coat of paint.

The club progressed from box-pleated tunics to pin pleated skirts and polo tops for a more
modern uniform. Currently, Gymea Netball Club is very fortunate as it is the only club with the SSNA that has its own clubhouse with three sealed courts, each of which has full lighting.

2017 saw Gymea Netball Club enter the modern era with a new logo unveiled. The club has gone from strength to strength with well over six hundred members and 57 teams, making it the largest netball club in the Sutherland Shire.

Gymea Netball Club remains a community driven club administrated entirely by volunteers. The club not only provides the opportunity for all ages to play netball, but also the development of player skills and mentoring for coaches and umpires. The club continues to seek a safe, fair and inclusive environment for everyone involved in netball.
